This War... it's so... cold

The Countdown is on... to The Larry Springer Show
We hope that you took full advantage of your work day today for The Larry Springer Show. It sure seemed like everyone was working, So, either you were, or you're getting really good at fake working. Remember, we go live on Tuesday next week!
All Jerry asks is that you continue the high standards he set on his show.

So Much Cold War
In an amazing case of serendipity on the part of the universe, several media outlets, both conventional and online, are doing big features on the Cold War and/or the 80's.

  • CNN is doing an entire series on the 80's. The website companion to the series is here. It has a ton of amazing content with articles and videos. As an official child of the era, I can vouch for its authenticity and quality material. It's basically a whole site covering my childhood. If you really want to have some fun, you can "80's yourself!" You upload a picture of yourself and then give yourself an 80"s style make over. You can do that here. It is a little over the top, but it is definitely good, clean, American fun.
  • Now, the 80's aren't exactly straight up Cold War stuff, so another amazing feature that popped up this week is on my favorite website The AV Club. (seriously, this is my favorite website) It just so happens that it is Cold War Week at their site. The gate way to all of their stuff is found here. There is a ridiculous amount of content; all of it fantastic.
    • One particularly awesome feature is this Cold War Pop Culture Timeline. It is so well done. It is actually a great spot for you for future research on the topic.
    • Just a quick disclaimer if you spend some time looking around at The AV Club. Occasionally, they use language that is a bit "colorful", so you've been warned.

Final day of Covers Week here at the blog
Alright, we're going to mix things up again with our cover week. Yesterday, we had several versions of the same song or artist (David Bowie) done by different artists. Now, we'll try the same artist doing different songs. Our artist today is Iron & Wine. Even though that sounds like a band, it is really the performance cognomen of one Sam Beam. He has an amazing catalog of beautiful folk inspired, introspective indie rock if you like that sort of thing. If you're looking for a great album to start with, go with The Shepard's Dog. Excellent!
Our first Iron and & Wine cover is the classic Postal Service song, "Such Great Heights". Here's the original:
By the way, if it sounds like this band is ripping off Owl City, that's because Owl City is a poor man's version of this band.
Here is Iron & Wine's fantastic, but very different cover version. Try not to weep too much.
Outstanding!

Our next Iron & Wince cover will come courtesy of one of the all time greats of modern music, New Order. I really need to do an entire week of just New Order at some point. They're just too good. Here is their fabulous song "Love Vigilantes".
That'll put a little pep in your step, eh?
Well, here is Iron & Wines exceptional cover version. Enjoy, and have a great weekend!
