Today we went over the characteristics of Greek drama, the highest form of Classical Greek art. Be sure you understand and can define the following Greek drama terms:
- chorus
- tragic hero
- catharsis
and that you know Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus.
Next week straight into the drama of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. Oedipus is part of a tragic cycle of plays which include Antigone & Oedipus at Colonus, which was remade as a gospel play in the 80's called Gospel at Colonus and has Morgan Freeman in it. 10/10 recommend.
Honestly, the Greek tragedies can be a bit of a beat down. They are so tragic and you cry a lot. If I could, I would recommend the comedies! They are pretty funny, the Greek's humor is a bit like Will Farrell's if you're into those kinds of jokes. I especially like the comedies of Aristophanes. In fact, Spike Lee's Chi-raq is based on an Aristophanes play!
This weekend you don't really have any homework for us, so consider reading ahead or knocking out a humanities experience - I blogged some ideas of Wednesday's blog!
This day in history:
